Michel Bastos joins Roma on loan

[one_fourth last=”no”]File:AS Roma logo (2013).svg[/one_fourth]AS Roma have confirmed the signing of Brazilian winger Michel Bastos from UAE club Al Ain, the naturally gifted player will join the Serie A side on loan for the remainder of the season. Roma confirmed the transfer on their official website and he could feature in their next Serie A game away to Verona on Sunday.

Bastos passed a medical at the Stadio Olimpico today and the move sees him joining up with Rudi Garcia again, the French manager had previously worked with Michel Bastos when he was in charge of Lille in Ligue 1. Rafa Benitez was also keen to sign Bastos and the Napoli manager made a last minute bid for his signature however Bastos’ good relationship with Garcia helped secure the transfer to i Giallorossi. In the 2008-2009 season with Lille under the tutelage of Garcia, Bastos was particularly prominent scoring 14 goals and providing 11 assists.

The exciting midfielder is vastly experienced and can add some flair and talent to the squad at Roma, and Garcia feels his presence can help in their push for the Serie A title this season, they currently sit second 8 points behind leaders Juventus. Bastos had a great 7 year spell in Ligue 1 and Garcia is hoping he can emulate his performances with Lille and Lyon with his Roma team. He racked up nearly 200 league appearances between Les Dogues and Les Gones banging in over 50 goals.

It’s been a busy 2013 for Bastos, he spent the first half of the season on loan with Schalke in the Bundesliga impressing with 14 league appearances and 4 goals. In August Bastos was sold by Lyon to UAE side Al Ain for €4m and he has gone on to play in 15 league games for the Middle East club, netting 3 times. Bastos has however failed to acclimatise to life in the United Arab Emirates and now Roma have stepped in to bring the player back to Europe. They have paid Al Ain a €1.1m loan fee for Bastos and they also have an option at the end of the loan period to make his transfer permanent for a fee of €3.5m.

The 30-year-old has also represented Brazil 10 times and would relish the opportunity to play at the upcoming World Cup in his home country. He is hoping his transfer to Roma and some good performances may catch the eye of Luiz Felipe Scolari and see him make the journey home for tournament this summer.
