Marcos Alonso heading to Black Cats on loan

[one_fourth last=”no”]File:Logo Sunderland.svg[/one_fourth]Sunderland manager Gus Poyet will wrap up the loan signing of versatile left sided defender Marcos Alonso from Fiorentina, with the player set to arrive on Wearside in the next couple of days to undergo a medical ahead of the transfer. His father Marcos Alonso Sr confirmed this to Italian media outlets recently.

A product of the Real Madrid youth academy, Alonso has struggled to settle into life at La Viola making just three appearances for the club since signing for them in the summer.

Alonso joined English side Bolton Wanderers in 2010 after failing to break into the first team and struggling to make a significant impact at the Santiago Bernabéu. He would go on to spend 3 years with the club however suffered relegation from the Premier League with the Trotters in the 2011-2012 season. During his last season at the club, Alonso was voted the Fan’s Player of the Year and manager Dougie Freedman did offer the Spanish player a new contract but he instead opted for a move to Italy.

During his time in England, Alonso racked up 35 appearances for Bolton whilst they were in the top flight, scoring on 5 occasions. His experience in the Premier League is seen as an vital asset by Black Cats boss Poyet and with Andrea Dossena the only senior left back at the club, the Uruguayan is set to move quick in order to land the Spaniard.

Alonso can also cover left midfield and if Sunderland are to avoid the drop this season, Poyet will need to bring in as much quality and experience as possible. It looks like he will have to utilise the loan market though, as Black Cats owner Ellis Short is thought to be unwilling to invest in the team after careless spending from previous managers.
