Manchester United lodge £35m bid for Juan Mata
Since signing for the Blues from Valenica in August 2011 in a deal worth around £23.5m, Mata has been inspirational for Chelsea and his impressive performances at Stamford Bridge saw him earn consecutive Chelsea Player of the Year awards in 2012 and 2013. However since Mourinho’s return to the dugout at Chelsea, the Spanish international has struggled to impress the Portuguese manager and he has started only half of the Blue’s Premier League games, completing the full 90 minutes only twice.
The creative midfielder has been clearly frustrated and is seeking a move away from Stamford Bridge as soon as possible. Juan Mata was part of the Spain squad that won the World Cup in 2010 and European Championship in 2012 and he is worried about losing his place in Vicente del Bosque’s squad for the World Cup Finals and is desperate for a transfer so he can play first-team football again.
The 25-year-old did not train with Chelsea’s first team squad at the Cobham Training Centre today prompting further speculation of his likely departure and BBC Football are suggesting that the Red Devil’s have tabled a bid for the superstar through intermediaries acting on behalf of the Premier League champions.
It remains to be seen if Chelsea and Mourinho will actually accept this offer as the ‘Special One’ does not want to strengthen a direct rivals squad. In fact, United’s bid may actually spark a European battle for Mata’s signature with PSG and Real Madrid also sniffing around the player. Another exciting possibility on the table for Mourinho is to do a deal with United for Mata and agree a potential transfer for Wayne Rooney to Stamford Bridge in the summer. It’s going to be an exciting last 9 days of the January transfer window, that’s for sure.
