Aiden McGeady to join Everton

Roberto Martinez was keen to add the attacker to his squad in January however Spartak Moscow were only willing to sell him so they could receive a much needed financial boost. The Russian club paid £9.5m to get McGeady from Celtic and were keen to recoup at least £7m for the 27-year-old.

McGeady was recently dropped from the Spartak first team and manager Valery Karpin also banished him to training with the reserves. The midfielder was accused of failing to heed Karpin’s instructions during training and matches at the end of November and he hasn’t featured for the Russians since then.

The Republic of Ireland star is desperate to leave Russia and he has indicated he will not sign any contract extension for Spartak. Toffees manager Roberto Martinez has stepped in to take advantage of the situation and give McGeady his lifeline out of Russia. Martinez tried to sign the player when he was in charge of Wigan and recently confirmed: “We are very close to a deal with Aiden for the summer, that is true. You know I like him as a player.”

Spartak’s sporting director Roman Askhabadze also announced a deal was close: “He was offered a contract extension by us, but he has refused it. He did it for family reasons, because his wife and children have not adapted to Moscow.”

Despite being born in Scotland, McGeady represents the Republic of Ireland and he has 63 caps and 3 goals to his name. Without regular first team football, McGeady feels his place in the Irish squad is in danger and he also believes he has a better chance of being recognised by new boss Martin O’Neill  by playing for Everton regularly in the Premiership.

McGeady scored 37 goals in 252 appearances for Celtic before making the move to Spartak Moscow in August 2010. Since making the move to the Russian capital he has scored 13 goals and made 29 assists in 92 appearances.
