Jan Vertonghen on Barcelona radar
Barcelona are holding tabs on Jan Vertonghen’s situation at Tottenham Hotspur with the view of making a move for the player when the January transfer window opens up, reports Sports Direct News.
The Catalan side had attempted, and was unsuccessful, to sign a defensive player over the summer as they proceed to search for an eventual alternative for the veteran Carles Puyol.
Vertonghen had been high on Gerardo Martino’s wish list together with the likes of Liverpool’s Daniel Agger, Paris Saint-Germain’s Thiago Silva and Chelsea’s David Luiz, with the Belgian looking as one of the more attainable names.
And they could be motivated to eventually make a official bid after news of his disillusionment at White Heart Lane was made public. The 26-year-old is said to be disappointed at being made to play out of position so often.
Manager Andre Villas-Boas has frequently used Vertonghen at left-back in the absence of Danny Rose and he was positioned there again during Spurs’ 6-0 hammering at the hands of Manchester City at the weekend regardless of getting his case forward to Andre Villas-Boas.
Spurs chief Daniel Levy will most likely push a hard bargain for the Belgian international, and is probably to demand in excess of £20m for the player he brought in for £8m in 2012.
