Manchester United Gundogan Hopes Dashed with Dortmund Deal Extended
Premier League giants Manchester United have been dealt a heavy blow in their quest for a new midfielder as one of their targets Ilkay Gundogan signed a new deal with his club Borussia Dortmund.
Despite the 23-year-old having been sidelined through much of the season with injury, Dortmund still considers the midfield man to be a high-priority asset and sought to finally quash the rumours the Gundogan could leave the club by signing him to a new contract set to run until 2016.
Dortmund announced the contract renewal with Gundogan in their official club website yesterday.
Apart from Manchester United, sources in Spain suggest Real Madrid and Barcelona were thought to also be keeping tabs on the midfielder.
As for the Old Trafford outfit, they will certainly hope their other targets don’t slip from their hands, with the club thought to be eyeing moves for the likes of Toni Kroos, Marco Reus and William Carvalho.
Gundogan was a key player for Dortmund last season, making a total 45 appearances. This season, however, due to his injury woes, his tally has been shrunk to just three.
Before his stint with Dortmund, Gundogan played for fellow German club Nurnberg, making a total 53 appearances.
